Happy Thanksgiving!

I am thankful for having such an incredible place to perform my craft in a way that is beneficial to others. The Little Red Day Spa is such a magical place for me. I am pleased to be a part of it.

Before I head out to what is sure to be a marvelous dinner with family, I want to remind you of the Little Red Studio's Black Friday Holiday Bazaar that will be going on tomorrow from 11am until 7pm at the Little Red Bistro and the Little Red Studio. We have so many people who are ready to put their art and hand crafted goods up for your perusal and purchase that we will be taking over the whole place!

Cheri and I will have a table for our very own spa products. There are 3 kinds of salt scrubs, massage oils, body mists and gift bags. My essential oil kit is already packed so that I can do custom oil and fragrance blends throughout the day.

Other cool stuff available: the very first LRS book of poetry, Jeff Hengst's paintings and works on paper, abstract paintings by Terry Johnson, sculptures, framed and unframed photography by Jim Duvall, jewelry by a few different artists including Kirsten Lauzon, knitted hats and scarves, metal art, hand crafted candles and glass art.

Oh! I almost forgot the tarot card readings that will be available on a first come first serve basis with Julie Hekate in the Bistro.

Last year’s after Thanksgiving Holiday Bazaar was so much fun, we decided that we would include other Seattle artists in on our fun this time around. The Little Red Studio is pleased to be able to offer you a beautiful venue to browse the work of more than 20 local artists and crafters. Painters, photographers, sculptors, jewelry makers, herbalists, knitters and glass artists are just a few of the artisans signed up, to give you an idea of the variety in store for you. The Little Red Day Spa will have an assortment of their custom spa products available for purchase. Services such as custom blending of massage oils and fragrances and tarot card readings will be offered throughout the day.

Of special note is the availability of the first printing of “The Little Red Anthology” which is a collection of classic Little Red Studio poetry by Eileen Fix, David Jones and all the other poets’ voices you have enjoyed over the years at shows. Many of the published poets will be on hand to sign your copy of the book and perhaps even give an impromptu reading.

The Little Red Bistro will of course be open all day to satisfy your hunger and thirst, as well as selling gift certificates.

So if you love to shop for the holidays but want to avoid the corporate marketing and retail craziness, then consider coming around and seeing the fine art, crafts, jewelry and other handmade gifts on display.

Little Red Studio's Black Friday Art Bazaar - 11/27, 11am -7pm

Jeff has tasked me with organizing this year's Bizarre Bazaar. I really like the idea of having an alternative to the traditional Black Friday hoopla. This will be a relaxed affair full of art and hand made items. This year we have the Bistro operating to nourish you and your patrons, making this a lovely experience.

This is an open call for vendors. This year we have space for a lot more vendors. There will be a few tables in the Bistro and all of Harrison to make your art available for purchase. This is a loosely curated Bazaar. While not every piece of art needs to be approved, I will be asking to see a representative portion of your work. I want to have a variety of art mediums and hand-crafted items available to our community.

Who is eligible to sell stuff at the LRS Bazaar:
- any artist with original art work (Putting Uncle Bob's old photos up for sale is not allowed unless you have painted over it or in some other way incorporated it into your art.)
- any maker or crafter of hand made products
- any performer with works of their art (example: a dancer can sell dvd's of their performing or teaching but not of random dance performances they were not involved in.)
- any one with services that can be given during the Bazaar, such as Tarot card readings, massages, custom made art, etc...

Table Fees: (Payable at time of set up.)
Non-Troupe members: Small table (approx. 3 foot square) - $20, Large Table (conference sized) - $40
Non Troupe member artists can share a table with a Troupe member for half off the Table Fee.

Money issues:
- Everyone is encouraged to start the day with their own cash bank of small bills.
- Vendors are responsible for collecting and paying all applicable sales tax.
- The Bistro cannot make change without a purchase.
- Use of the LRS credit card machine is available to all Bazaar vendors for a 5% fee.

Since I am the director...

I may not be the director of the Day Spa anymore, but now I am the Gold Show Director for the Little Red Studio. I will probably end up talking about that more in the blog. I suppose I should change the name of the blog, but the Spa and the Studio are so entwined, that I don't think it too odd for me to talk about both of them in the same venue.

If you feel like spending this Friday evening dancing, laughing and playing with me, go buy a ticket here. On the 16th we will have our regular Gold Show, if you can call that particular event regular. On Saturday the 17th, we'll have a special "Gold Medallion" show that will start an hour earlier, at 8pm, for a special unveiling ceremony before the show begins. Both shows are going to be great fun.

Go see a show! Or two!

Last night I was lucky enough to be invites to see the musical "Catch Me if You Can", which was playing at the gorgeous 5th Avenue Theater. This was an exceptionally well done production. The sets were amazing and the mechanics of the changing of the sets was very impressive. The singers/actors were great, over all, with a few outstanding gems. I have a very soft spot in my heart for musicals and this one with be among my favorites. After the show, we stopped by the Little Red Bistro for dessert and had gave our review to the bartender, Noel.

On the other end of the theatrical spectrum,as well as the other end of the week, the Little Red Studio has a Gold show this coming Friday. I am working on a new act for this show. Tomorrow, when I have what I hope will be the final rehearsal, my partner and I will set it to music. Tickets can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets or reserved by calling (206) 328-4758.

Three Night Stand: A Dance Concert

Once again, the Little Red Studio is thrilled to offer an entire evening dedicated to the art of dance and movement. Often seen as part of our other shows, it's our chance to highlight this particular art form for you, our audience, as well as for our choreographers, dancers and physical performers.

"Three Night Stand" will offer a wide array of dance formats - everything from Jazz and Modern to Waltz, Tango and Belly Dance. Including choreography from Daniela Maurie, Cody Strauss, Kerry Christianson, Simonne Garrigues and more - this show promises to be a delightful visual feast of the physical side of art!

Please check out this incredible idea from one of our LRS troupe members. Christina is putting together a weekend of artistic fun and education for children. She is currently looking for people who have experience and interest in one or more areas of the artistic realm who would be willing to present (or help wrangle kids) a short workshop on August 1t or 2nd.

I am looking forward to being a part of this, even if I only end up as an attendee.

Urban Arts Weekend - August 1 and 2 at Little Red Studio
Help create full self expression and contribution in a community effort that seeks to share art in all its forms.

The Vision
Empowering kids and parents to experience art and relate to one another in a supportive community of passionate teachers.

The Format
(This is still in the planning phases, so details will change and evolve.)

Start: Each day will contain numerous art classes/topics running in tandem, many of which are developed to overlap or dovetail with other topics, and some of which may involve an indoor and an outdoor (field trip - sculpture park, zoo, etc.) component. The final topics will be chosen based on logistical feasibility (what we can fit in the space), resource/materials load (what we can provide or get donated), and your interest (if no one wants to teach watercolors there won't be a watercolors class). Depending on the topic's difficulty or teacher inclination, each class could run 2-4 hours.

Lunch break: If we put together a Cooking class, it's possible that lunch will be what that class makes. Otherwise, people will need to bring a sack lunch.

Close: Show-and-tell and/or performance respectively for visual and performance art.

The Teachers
As a teacher, you are responsible to create your own plan including what you want to teach and how. But each class should involve at least an introduction/basics including the tools used or concepts needed, any safety concerns, and then the hands-on portion. Depending on the topic's difficulty, each teacher will have access to helpers. The point of the class is to give every child/parent combo a chance to play with/practice what they're learning.

Materials Note: When considering whether you'd like to teach a topic, please think about any sources you know that could donate materials, and even think about materials you might have at home. The registration fee will cover some of this, but the more donations we can get, the lower that fee will be.

Helpers Note: We need helpers to move people around the space, coordinate resources, and act as class aids. If you don't want to teach that doesn't mean you can't come play. Seriously.

The Topics
All topics presented are possibilities, intended to jump-start your creativity. If you want to do something that isn't listed, please email me.

* Painting: finger, body, oil, watercolor, paint dancing (freestyle dancing while painting), wall (use a broom to paint on a wall), objects (see Crafts and Sculpture)
* Drawing: figure/object/still-life (people, flowers, buildings, cars, animals); freestyle (what they see in their mind); comics (incorporates Writing module)
* Photography/Videography: documenting the day; music videos (could incorporate Theater, Dance, and Music topics); portraits and/or still-lifes; wildlife/nature architecture/urban landscape
* Framing (making frames and/or mats to contain visual art)
* Theater (could incorporate Dance): improv, acting
* Music: vocal (solo or group); beat boxing/rapping (could incorporate Poetry); instrumental; appreciation (could incorporate Dance)
* Aerials/gymnastics: floor work (could incorporate Dance); hoop/rope/tissu; spinning/poi
* Dance: belly; jazz; ballroom; freestyle/object (balls, flags, yoga balls)
* Crafts: hardware repurposing (take apart broken toasters, blenders, etc. and make sculpture); decoupage/collage/modge podge; paper mache; plaster of paris casting; egg or rock painting; decorate accessories (jewelry, hats, lunch boxes, belts, sneakers, backpacks, ipod/cell phone holders)
* Cooking: make lunch for the day and then serve it; snacks/hors'douvres/canapes/finger foods (could incorporate Photography);coffee and fizzy beverages
* Writing: poetry (could incorporate Vocal and/or Performance topics); short stories; comics/graphic novels (could incorporate Drawing)
* Sculpting(could incorporate Painting): cookie dough (could incorporate Cooking); clay; DAS or other polymer stuff

Registration will be required to keep a bound on class size, and there will be a fee. We're going to keep the cost as low as possible because this is a community outreach project and volunteer based.

Seattle Erotic Art Festival is open!

Last night was the invitation only Artist Reception, and there was a great turn out for what is essentially a dress rehearsal opening. Most everything was in place, the performances were sexy and sleek, and the art was selling even though not all the labels were on the wall yet!

Today, starting at noon, the Seattle Erotic Art Festival is open to the public. I will be there most of the day, except between 3pm and 6pm when I am at the Spa, so make sure to say hi to me at one of the docent tables.

Erotic Shorts

No, not underwear. Plays about sexuality and relationships and love.

I just now got home from watching the Little Red Studio's fourth Erotic Shorts: An Evening of Short Erotic Plays. I am still reeling from the experience. What an emotional ride! Some of the plays were wistful, others funny as all get out, tenderness crept into more than a few and one made me weep. I wish I could convey how much I was moved but that would be terribly difficult to do coherently since each play pushed different emotional buttons.

There is still another weekend you can see these plays, for which I am very thankful. Next weekend is the Seattle Erotic Art Festival, so if Erotic Shorts hadn't been extended to a 2 week run, I wouldn't have gotten to see it, since the decision was made to have it coincide with the Festival. In fact, one of the plays, "Pass the Salt", is going to be preformed during Thursday's Invitation Only Artist Reception. (The only way to get into that is to buy a Velvet Ticket Package.)

I highly recommend seeing Erotic Shorts. Art that delights, amuses and stirs you is so nourishing.

Watch as a husband and wife have a typical dinner at home, or do they? A first date unfolds, a sexy film shoot gets a little off track, a glimpse backstage at two actors during a Shakespeare production, and two co-workers struggle to find a connection with one another... These stories and more will delight and fascinate you, creating a wonderful evening of theater at Little Red Studio!

Busy! Busy!

This week has been full of bodywork and art! I have barely had time to even think about posting.

I have a few new anatomy and massage books I want to gush about, so look for that post soon.

As always, when we are busy, make sure to call in advance for a spa or massage session. Same day appointments are unlikely, but occasionally you can get lucky. I had a 5:30pm scheduled for today that canceled, and then someone who called this morning got lucky and took that spot.

This weekend is the Little Red Studio's 24 hour Art-a-Thon. I will be there working on new aromatherapy blends and spa products, as well as a clay and dance performance that came out of a spa session! Feel free to come by and see what all us wacky artists are up to.

I hope you are getting a chance to get out in the sunshine. Remember to take care of yourself and stretch when you go play outdoors!

The Nights of the Seattle Erotic Art Festival

Each night of the Seattle Erotic Art Festival's entertainment is themed around "Indulge Your Senses." We are encouraging guests to join the volunteers and performers in dressing up. Please note that the Thursday Artist's Reception is by invitation only, the only ticket you can buy for attendance is the Velvet Package.

THURSDAY 4/30
Tease -- Artist Reception: A White Tie Affair. By invitation only. Formal wear appreciated.

Formality combined with sensuality. Whatever you consider formal. Ballgowns and tailcoats? Chokers and waistcoats? Uniforms and regalia? Dress to fascinate, charm, flirt, tantalize, beguile and tease. When in doubt, go with something all in white - a bewitching display of innocence and purity.

FRIDAY 5/1 - May Day!
Seduce -- A Silk and Satin Soirée. Seductive dress encouraged.

Clothing that is lavish and luscious with fabrics that attract a caress. Suits and smoking jackets or heels and garters; all in silks and satins and other sensual fabrics. Evoke a feeling of sensuous film noir decadence and drama, femme fatale energy, or sexy sophistication that is sleek and elegant. Dress to entice, arouse, lure, persuade and seduce. When in doubt, go sexy and dark.

SATURDAY 5/2
Indulge -- A Celebration of the Senses. Extravagant attire encouraged. Prizes awarded for the most indulgent and outrageous costumes.

Attract attention. Challenge yourself. No holds barred - bring out your most outrageous sexy outfits. Feathers, fur, glitter, fishnet, latex, chains - any version of "sexy" that appeals to you. Show off something you've not dared wear before. Dress to delight, provoke, captivate, enthrall and indulge. When in doubt, go colorful and extravagant .

These themes set the tone for each evening but are by no means requirements. We encourage you to attend the Festival in whatever you consider sexy and makes you feel good.

2 Night stand is incredible!

I cried over 2 pieces, laughed numerous times, squirmed with delight a few times, and even squealed once. There is a little bit of everything in this show, dark, light-hearted, sexy, silly, serious, odd and downright fun. If you have time this weekend, I highly encourage you to check it out.

Little Red Studio Presents Two Night Stand: A Dance Concert

I just watched "Two Night Stand" tonight. It is LRS's first evening devoted to dance as a performing art. And it is fantastic. It is a fun textured variety show. It starts with an old favorite, Kerry's "Peep Show" number from the Red Show. Richard Jessup has put together a hot all male ensemble piece that is a true crowd pleaser. There are fantastic one person pieces, some thought provoking works and some pure fun pieces. It is going to be a great weekend for LRS. And I know this will be the first of many nights devoted to dance.

And....in case you hadn't heard, the Fremont Arts Council will be providing us with a bar! All proceeds from the bar will go to the Fremont Arts Council.

Art is my world.

More so than usual. I spent the weekend helping to proof the catalog for the Seattle Erotic Art Festival. My brain is awash with images and themes. I am already scheduling out for when my hands will be as full as my brain with Festival duties. I will be unavailable for sessions 4/30 through 5/3. I will be answering the phones and all my other practitioners will be ready to pamper you. Having an indulgent time in the Spa, attending the Erotic Shorts playing at Little Red Studio and the Festival would be a fabulous way to have a decadent weekend!

I still can't give away what the art is, but if you want to get a sneak peak, and be involved in the Festival, you can volunteer to be a docent with me. I am organizing all the training meetings for this year's Festival Docents, and that includes a chance to preview the art that has been accepted or invited to be shown. The training also includes a lecture by Jeff Hengst, the owner and painter of the artwork within the Little Red Day Spa. He is devoting the Tuesday Art Talk Night on April 7th to the topic "What is Erotic Art?"

So, I am looking for people who would like to dress up and talk to people about sexy art April 30th and May 1st - 3rd. This year's Festival will be held at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall and is going to be a grand combination of art, performance, spectacle and socializing.

The Docents of the Seattle Erotic Art Festival are much like the traditional docent: a person who gives tours and information at a museum or gallery in order to facilitate an enjoyable experience for the visiting guests viewing the art. At the Festival, we have taken a page from the Little Red Studio and will be putting a slightly more personable spin on the traditional docent duties to reflect the community strengthening ethos of the Sex Positive Community Center. A general knowledge of art is appreciated, but not a requirement as there will be basic trainings for all volunteer Docents. Jeff has graciously agreed to give a short lecture, "What is Erotic Art?"

A Docent at the Festival will have the responsibility of:

~ Being available to answer questions about the art and artists in the 2009 Festival
~ giving art tours (training is provided)
~ maintaining and communicating an enthusiastic attitude about the variety and diversity of erotic art
~ making guests feel welcome and comfortable

Please note, we are encouraging Docents to dress in accordance with this year's theme, "Indulge Your Senses." Each evening of the Festival will have a variation of the theme for the feel, dress and performances presented.

Auditions for Erotic Shorts at Little Red Studio!

This is our fourth round of the very popular event we call "Erotic Shorts", an evening of short erotic plays. The show will run Friday - Sunday evenings, April 24th through May 3rd. Rehearsals will be determined by each director and his/her cast.

We have nine plays in this round, including one improv piece. Below you will see a brief description of casting needs for each show.

Auditions will be cold readings from the scripts. When you write to sign up for an audition time (1/2 hour time slots), please let me know which plays you might be interested in and I'll send you electronic copies to read ahead of time.

No More Than Reason by Louise Penberthy / Directed by Beau Prichard

Needed: A male and female, able to play around the age of fifty. The role and the show calls for a couple to be very familiar and comfortable with each other, portrayed as not necessarily friends, but long-time associates. The script involves a small amount of Shakespeare, but experience with the 'speare is not necessary. Artistic collaboration with the two performers will be highly valued and encouraged.

This is the story of a male soldier and the interaction he has with a female 'angel' from his past while he is in the process of dying. It will likely require full or partial nudity for the male role, depending on how we work it out in rehearsals. Also need to cast a 2nd soldier (male or female), in modern uniform, to close the play.

This is a couple who have been together for many many years. They are extremely plain and preferably not a "beautiful couple".

Needed: One man, one woman - any age - these two characters have been working in neighboring cubicles for years. Both incredibly shy, they have developed a shorthand of "sounds" through the wall to communicate and ultimately "flirt" with one another.

"…In Bed", so named for the joke that people say to each other after reading their fortune from a fortune cookie.

Needed: 2 Females, 2 Males, 1 MC or host, male or female

Cast of "…In Bed" will be required to improvise the dialog of the play and will be asked to wear as little clothing as they are comfortable, during performance.

Submit your art to the Seattle Erotic Art Festival

Friday is the last day you can submit art for the jury selection process. If you were thinking about entering art for this year's Festival, you bet jump on it! Go to SEAFArtist.com to register, submit your art, and pay your fee.

If you are a performance artist, and interested in performing during the Festival, please submit your application at SEAFArtist.com. Performers must submit an application to be considered for the auditions that will be happening in February.

Want to volunteer for the Seattle Erotic Art Festival? I am looking for people to act as Docents during the Festival. I have been involved with the Festival at varying levels since the first one. Last year I took a step back from putting on the Festival and was a performer. This year I am on the organizing committee and am very excited to be back as Lead Docent. Please consider joining me, either as a volunteer or a patron this May 1st through 3rd!

Call for Scripts!

Once a season, Little Red studio produces a more traditionally theatrical event. This spring, the Studio will host our 3rd year of Erotic Shorts, which will coincide with the Seattle Erotic Art Festival.

Kerry recently put out the call for scripts. Please pass this on to anyone or repost anywhere you think it would be of interest.

We have set dates for this season's production of Erotic Shorts. It will run for six nights: April 24th, 25th and 26th and May 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Now is the time we're starting to think about gathering up potential scripts to be considered for this round.

Here are the requirements for submitting a script:

1) It needs to be 15 minutes or less in length

2) The themes can include eroticism, love, relationships, sex, or romance - comedies, dramas, and musicals are all welcome

3) Cast should should include no more than 8-10 actors.

4) Script can be submitted as a word document over e-mail (kerry@hengststudio.com) OR in hard copy format dropped off at the office or mailed to 1506 Franklin Ave E, Seattle, WA 98102

5) Scripts are due by February 15th, 2009

If you have any questions about this process, please let me know! I also encourage you to share this e-mail with any friends outside of the LRS circle. This process is open to any and all playwrights.

Seattle Erotic Art Festival puts out Call for Artists

I am involved with the Seattle Erotic Art Festival which is being held May 1st -3rd, 2009. If you know any artists who might want to submit to the show, please pass this on to them. The Festival has garnered prestige for accepted artists and has a great track record for sales for artists.

Call for Art Deadline January 30

We invite artists of all backgrounds, countries, ethnicities, cultures, genders, sexualities, and ages (18+) to submit up to five (5) works of art of any media. Sculptors, multimedia artists and painters are particularly encouraged to apply; please note that photography is a highly competitive medium. Artists do not need to attend the Festival in order to participate.

The Seattle Erotic Art Festival was founded in 2002 by the Foundation for Sex Positive Culture to promote freedom of sexuality, speech, and creativity through the erotic expression of fine art. The Festival strives to exhibit work not easily found in mainstream galleries and museums; we enjoy art that avoids, or pokes fun at, cliches or stereotypical images.

Entry Requirements
Accepted artists must be at least 18 by April 30, 2009, the first day of the next Festival. Artists may only submit finished art of their own creation. The Festival is intended as a contemporary art festival; only art created in 2006 or more recently will be considered. Art previously displayed at the Festival will not be considered for the Exhibition but may be considered for the Festival Store.

How to Enter
Only electronic entries submitted via the online entry form will be accepted. Paper, email, CD, and all other forms of entry will be discarded. The submission deadline is January 30, 2009.

Entry Form Requirements:
* Legal name and contact information.
* Brief bio or artistic statement (approximately 3 sentences and no more than 250 characters).
* Description of each work (title, year, media, dimensions, and sale price).
* JPEG images of submitted works.
* US$15 entry fee (waived for non-North American artists).

Incomplete entries will not be accepted. The Festival reserves the right to refuse any entry. Substitutions are not allowed.

Festival Store
Artists wishing to sell items exclusively through the Festival Store must also complete the online artist registration form (be sure to indicate that you want to show via the Store), but do not need to fill out the Art Submission form at this time; and are required to pay the $15 submission fee. The focus on the Festival Store is prints, small work, jewelry, oddities, books, DVDs, collectibles, and similar merchandise. Artists do not have to be accepted to the Exhibition in order to submit merchandise to the Festival Store; however, the items they submit must be approved by Store Management.
