A bit of this and a little of that.

Tomorrow is the first Sunday of June, which means we are shifting into a regular pattern for Sunday evenings.

1st and 3rd Sundays will be Men's Night. Richard will be in the Spa from 7pm - 10pm with doors open for soaking, floating and relaxing. Cost is $10 per person, with mini Shitasu sessions available for an additional fee.

2nd and 4th Sunday's will be Couple's Night, which is open to all genders provided you come as a couple. cost is $25 per couple. Mark your calendars for next weeks inaugural Couple's Night.

Please remember that you can also email me at Sophia at HengstStidio.com to make an appointment or ask question, as well as calling the spa at (206) 963-0772. I have a slight preference for email, as I can check email in between appointments, as I don't always have enough time to check the phone messages. I do encourage you to call or email a few days in advance, as same day (and sometimes even next day) appointments are not always possible. For weekends, it is suggested that you call 4-7 days in advance, as these days tend to fill up the fastest.

With the few days of warm weather we have had in the past few weeks, I have decided to lower the temperature of the hot tub. We did this last year, and it was amazing how much just a degree or two made in comfort. I will probably adjust for the each day's weather, until those warmer days become more consistent.

Back from vacation.

I am back from a short trip out of town and just in time for LRS's White Show. This show is going to be a light-hearted affair and a lot of fun. I have 3 parts to play, the largest being that of a woman who sneaks away for a clandestine picnic and turns her partner into a swing in order to do aerial tricks on him.

This is based on the performance I did at this last Seattle Erotic Art Festival, which most people couldn't see because of the staging. so, if you didn't get a chance to see me perform then, I can promise you that you will be able to see this act quite easily at LRS. Remember that the Studio performances happen at the building on the corner of Dexter and Harrison. Not at the same building the spa is located in.

Here is the press release for the Little Red Studio's White Show:

The wearing of white between Memorial Day and Labor Day brings up many memories of decades past and societal mores. Summer beach vacations, sprinkled with lavish parties and secret rendezvous, entice us to remember our own days and nights of coming out and to peel off the layers of winter to see what's peeking at us underneath...

In bygone eras of our history and of our lives, we remember that moment when innocence was lost, while so much more was yet to be discovered.

The White Show features all-live music from our incredible in-house band, "Red Delicious"! Tea parties, croquet, the Charleston and many more surprises await you in this fun romp of a show.

For reservations to pay at the door please call us at 206-328-4758 or buy your tickets online.

Vote for us, please!

The Seattle Times is doing its annual People's Picks for various categories around Seattle Life. I have just placed a vote for the Little Red Day Spa (under the Spa category) and Little Red Studio (under the Local Theater Company category) and would encourage you to do the same if you feel like it!

Thanks in advance!

I'll now end this shameless plea for attention.

Ladies' Night will be open Memorial Day for regular drop in hours from 6pm - 10pm. Courtnee will be holding court while I am away on vacation, helping you to feel comfortable in the space and offering $5 Full Body Brushing Exfoliation treatments. Please drop in and enjoy the Spa and meet Courtnee, our newest practitioner!

Also, Courtnee is about to complete massage school and will be offering free mini massages. (You will need to fill out a minimal amount of paperwork so she can get credit for the practice.) Cost is $10.

This will most likely be the last time the strawberry salt scrub will be available. We're down to the last jar. Next up is something with pineapple. I am thinking pineapple mango would be a nice combination. Kim wants to do pineapple and coconut. Anyone want to vote?

This weekend (and this weekend ONLY!) is the performance of the "Room of Our Own" project's original piece "Mercy Ride" at the Little Red Studio, Thursday - Saturday.

One of the Spa's practitioners has been working on this project for the last six months. It's a beautiful piece about selfhood and sex and freedom by 13 amazing women. Don't miss it!

Monday is Ladies' Night at the Spa!

Now that summer's almost here in full force, I would love to hear feedback on how the Spa Nights can still be as relaxing and comfortable. I was thinking that I would lower the ambient temperature, though I can promise you, there will be no air conditioning at the spa. Usually during the summer, we lower the hot tub's temperature to 97F so that Watsu sessions are more comfortable. Please let me know if you would like the hot tub turned down from it's soaking temperature of 100F.

As usual, I will be here from 6pm - 10pm at 1506 Franklin Ave. E. No reservations necessary, just drop in and enjoy the spa's offerings. I'll be doing a limited number of mini massages, too.

Next Monday is Memorial Day. We will be open regular hours. I will be on vacation so Courtnee* will be holding court next week in my place. She and I are cooking up special things for her to offer, so check back and see what she'll be up to next week.

*I'll introduce Courtnee properly as soon as thing slow down a little.

Wanted: Practitioners & Bodyworkers to Rent our Spa!

The Little Red Day Spa is opening it's doors to independent practitioners to rent and use the spa for their massage and bodywork business. We are offering hourly, half day and full day rates starting at $50, which will include use of all the Spa's equipment, linens and supplies. More rental info.

The Spa consists of a small office/waiting area and spacious treatment room, totaling 1200 sf. The actual Spa area contains a bathroom, a double, custom stonework shower, changing area complete with antique wardrobe, an 8'x8' medical device rated hot tub large enough to do Watsu, and open floor space for 3 massage tables to be set up at once, or a small yoga class, Thai massage or other body work styles requiring a large amount of floor area. A PDF file with diagram of Spa, labeled Lower Studio.

Due to this configuration, only one appointment is possible at a time. Rental times are 10am - 10pm daily, but flexible, and will be made on a first come first serve basis. (We use Google's online calendar, which you will be given access for scheduling purposes.)

If you are interested in renting work space at the Little Red Day Spa as an independent practitioner, please call Sophia at (206)963-0772 or email Sophia at HengstStudio.com. For a sneak preview of what the space looks like and more about what we do, please visit our web site.

A quiet time.

Normally, we are so busy that getting an appointment the same day you call is unlikely. Reviewing the calendar this morning, I noticed that we are in a lull for the next few days. The weekend is filling up fast, though. If you want a spa session this Saturday or Sunday, now is the time to call.

If same day scheduling is for you, today, Thursday and Friday have quite a few open appointments. Give me a call at 206-963-0772 or email me at Sophia and HengstStudio.com and we'll get you set up!

New music for Ladies' Night

Tonight I am going to play some music by Scott Ezell, a poet and musician who occasionally performs at Little Red Studio. I am always searching for new music to play during the spa sessions that is not the regular boring massage music. Scott's acoustic music may be a bit too sharp and peppy, at times, but I love the mellow roughness of his voice. If you come to Ladies' Night tonight, please give me feedback.

Monday Night is Ladies' Spa Night!

Sunday Art Show: Hengst works on paper

Sunday, May 11th from 1-6PM
406 Dexter Avenue N, Seattle, WA 98109
(206) 328-4758

To be so Fortunate:

Most of us wish that we had something we could do in those funny little moments throughout our day. These are the times between this or that when you have the time but not the energy for anything particular. And yet there is that yearning. To be productive! To be creative! For some, it's noodling around on the piano, for others it's, well, cleaning the bathroom.

Many visual artists develop a way of sketching that satisfies this itch. And if they are lucky, this practice becomes a tender intimate relationship with their muse. It's a way of communing with the roots of their artistic source without the burden of producing a "Serious work of art" or fulfilling the terms of a commission or even just lifting the materials and tools that are often more complex and costly. (You may be familiar with Dale Chihuly's ketchup bottle squirts on paper.) And if you are really lucky, this intimacy will become a source of inspiration for new directions and individual pieces in one's main artistic production. And if you are luckier still, these humble explorations may be worth looking at in their own right.

Jeff feels that lucky. For a long time he allowed every guest at LRS to pick one of his works of this nature off the wall or out of a tray as a way of saying thank you for coming and passing along the good fortune. Well, that was back when there were 20 guests on a good night. Now, with 80 or so guests coming almost every week, it just isn't possible.

So, we are having a sale and we are selling them at as reasonable a price as we can. But what are these works? What do they look like?

Jeff will be showing two types of this work in a special show this Sunday from 1-6PM. They will all be small works on paper. They are a cross between landscape and abstraction and they are made with the tools and materials of printers. In fact, they look a lot like prints but they are all one of a kind. Jeff considers these to be the most sophisticated and subtle of his creations. He will also be showing works that are 4"x6" photographs that have been painted over in a similar fashion. Many of the photographs are of LRS troupe members modeling or performing.

All works will be $20 or $40. These are great keep-sakes of LRS and make great gifts.

Just for Fun.

Hershey Kiss candies are a staple at the Little Red Day Spa. Here is a quiz that I found via MacAliflower's food blog, a place I sometimes look to for inspiration.

Sunday Nights scheduling

I have some scheduling changes that are in the works.

Men's Night has already shifted to every other Sunday. During the month of May, Richard will host Men's Night on the 11th and the 25th. Starting in June, it will be held the 1st and 3rd Sundays on the month. (Which is much easier to keep track of than every other week.) Hours and cost will remain the same. 7pm - 10pm and $10, respectively.

In the works is a Couple's Spa Night, which we are tentatively planning on starting in June. This will be held on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month, 7pm - 10pm. This evening will be geared towards couples of all genders coming in to pamper each other or just lounge together in the sumptuous space. Like the Men's and Ladies' Nights, the Couple's Night will be clothing optional, as well. There will be 2 or 3 massage tables set up for exchanges, a body mud station, salt scrubs, and tea and nibbles. We will have a practitioner on hand to facilitate use of the equipment and help you feel at home in the spa. There will also be watsu lessons going on in the later half of the evening for those who would like to learn how to float their partner. Cost will be $25 per couple and $15 for each additional person in your party.

Singles will not be allowed at this event. Public displays of affection are allowed, within reason. Please be respectful of other's boundaries.

Art show by Spa practitioner Zan!

Invoking Drala
Sunday, May 18th, 1 to 6pm
The Little Red Studio Gallery
406 Dexter Ave N

You are joyously invited to 'Invoking Drala' at the Little Red Studio Gallery. The art of Zan Edson and Sophie Brunet.

Trees, roots, rocks, earth, water... The natural world calls me and collects me, bringing my often furiously swirling human mind back to the moment, back to the breath filling my chest, the ferns tickling my legs, the warm rock, or rough bark against my cheek.

In celebration of this intimate, priceless, abundant, endless source of connection and in gratitude to Drala(a Tibetan word for natural magic or the spirits of nature), I've created a series of paintings and sculptures.

My friend Sophie Brunet will be gracing us with her Industrial series-paintings of crumbling industrial spaces-which both compliment and contrast the rooty glory of mine and remind us that beauty is also found in the least likely places.

Please come and enjoy! The opening will be from 1 to 6pm,with performances beginning at 5pm, so stop by at your leisure to peruse the art from 1 to 5 and stay if you like, for some amazing dance, music and poetry. Refreshments will be provided by Chef Kim, so they're sure to be yummy!

Love, Zan

Her show will run from the opening on May 18th, through June 6th. Please call the Little Red Studio Gallery at (206)328-4758 for special viewing hours outside of normal hours.

Full steam ahead!

This weekend we are super busy at the spa. I just have time enough to surface to let everyone know that there is no Men's Spa night tomorrow (Sunday the 4th) and Ladies' Spa night is happening Monday evening, 6-10pm.

If you call this weekend, please be patient!
