A note from Cheri:

This Sunday is the drop-in event that Sophia recently wrote about - I would like to convey my personal account of the experience.

It was a blast!

I had one of the most enjoyable experiences ever that night! It was beautiful! Many moments pop out for me when I reflect back,
but I delightfully recall the experience of giving a massage near the hot tub and glancing over to the other side of the room and witnessing a dozen bodies joyfully covered in mud (sculptural clay)! It was like looking at fine art sculptures coming to life - in my imagination I thought of the "after hours" in the art museum where the stone sculptures climb off their pedestals and have a celebration after the spectators (museum guests) leave for the day and the doors are locked up tight. Certainly a cause for a party where they can move their bodies freely and tell the stories they've been holding in all day! Pour some wine and feed each other delicious food samples they've wondered about. Frolicking freely until it's time to resume the work they were created to do.

Ok - another highlight - the men exclaiming about the softness of their skin at the end of the night on their way out the door - Yes!!!

Come join in - Ladies invite some men you know and love or want to know better... And gentlemen - find a gal to invite you and come experience the joy of deeply relaxing and the benefit of leaving with very soft skin!

Report on the new spa night.

A few guests have mentioned to me how much they wished we still did a "Couple's Spa Night". As an event, it was very hit and miss. Some evenings were fun and relaxing, and others were tense and quiet as pairs of people moved around the space trying to have a private experience in a semi-public venue. It was obvious to me that, for some of the couple's attending, their needs would have been better met during a private rental.

Hardly the type of atmosphere found during Ladies' Spa Night, which has become quite social in nature. I have nurtured an inclusive culture by introducing everyone as they arrive, to everyone already present. This has become a standard behavior of the regular guests, as well. I often am told that people have already introduced themselves before I get a chance. This one little thing has made it a welcoming space, without being cloying.

For a while now, women who have been enjoying Ladies' Spa Night have made comments along the lines of "I wish I could bring my boyfriend with me, he'd love the clay" or "My sweetie is so jealous that he can't come, too."

Cheri had the brilliant idea that there should be a night that women could bring their male partners to enjoy the spa, too. (The women with female partners already are taken care of.) An evening directly tied to the culture of Ladies' Night. With the social and relaxation aspects in tact, she was confident the awkwardness of the previous Couple's Nights would be avoided. Hence, the "Ladies and the Men they Invite" Spa Night was born.

The first two have gone very well with good attendance. last week's was infiltrated by a group of friends who took up most of the spa. They were a fun group and one of the other couple's reported to me that she and her sweetie had a relaxing time and even got caught up and included in the big group's frivolity.

The next one is a week from today, on November 15th. This is a drop in night from 6pm - 9pm, $15 per person.

A new spa night coming

I'm giving an early heads up for a new event at the Little Red Day Spa. So new that we are announcing it here at tonight's Women's Spa Night for the first time. I figured I should jump on the computer and make a note here, too. This is such a new development that we haven't even had a chance to change the web site yet.

Men's Spa Night is no longer being hosted at the Little Red Day Spa. In it's place on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, we will host "Women and the Men they Invite" Spa Night. So many regular Ladies' Night attendees have mentioned wishing they could bring their partners that it was the logical choice for our next event. The first one will be next Sunday, October 18th, opening at 6pm and going until 9pm. this is a drop in evening.

For more information, please give Cheri or I a call at (206)963-0772 or email us at relax@LittleRedDaySpa.com.

Werid web site stuff.

Periodically, I get a phone call from someone wanting to RSVP for the now defunct Couple's Spa Night. Each time, they give the the same answer to my query of how they found out about an event that we haven't had on the calendar for about four months: "I did an internet search and I am looking at the page right now." And then a discussion about new web pages and refreshing and updated pages takes place. It is usually very frustrating because each of us are claiming to be looking at the page and yet we aren't seeing the same information.

I finally remembered to do my own search for a couple's spa in Seattle and found the page people have been telling me about. And there it is, the old web pages from last summer, before we did the big overhaul on the Little Red Day Spa site. For some reason, those old pages are still stored on the server that hosts our web sites. Talk about embarrassing.

Refreshing doesn't get you to the new Spa pages, you have to type in www.LittleRedDaySpa.com into the address bar to get to the current pages. I have a message in to the person who updates the web site for LRS and the Day Spa and hopefully that confusion will be resolved.

As for the question of the return of Couple's Spa Night, it looks like it's not to be. It was a very difficult evening for us, as staff, to run efficiently and with clarity of vision. My current proposal on the table is to turn the SpeakEasy party/performance nights into a partial spa night. If you were at the last SpeakEasy, then you may have been a part of the body mud extravaganza that took place after the final act. It turned out exactly how I wished the Couple's Spa Nights would have turn into. We'll see. It's still another 2-3 months before the next SpeakEasy, plenty of time to scheme and gather feedback.

The schedule is filling up!

Valentine's Day at the Little Red Day Spa is full. Whether you were planning to come to the Couple's Spa Night & Party or you wanted to have a spa session with your sweetie, there are no more spaces or times available on Saturday the 14th or Sunday the 15th.

On Friday the 13th, we do have the late morning to early afternoon and one late evening appointment time open, though. Please give me a call at 206-963-0772 and I will get you on the schedule!

As a reminder, this special edition of Couple's Night on 2/14 is a reservation only event. No drop ins will be admitted. We aren't being mean, we just can't go past capacity! (Don't worry, we'll do another Couple's Spa Night & Party next quarter.)

Valentine's Day Spa Night & Party

Saturday, February 14th @ 9PM until about 1am.

Instead of the Sensual Repast, the Little Red Day Spa will be holding a special event that will be part Couple's Night, part Sensual Repast, part Little Red Studio.

Here is what Jeff wrote in the newsletter:

Valentine's Day is on Saturday this year and I know you are all wishing you had something really fun and fresh to do with and for your Sweetie. Well, we are offering something special at the Spa. We have a special evening planned that is only for couples, of all persuasions, of course.

Starting at 9:00 Sophie will have the spa ready for an evening of food and fun. While we are not preparing a feast like the Sensual Repast, we will have heavy hors devours and lots of chocolate and desserts. In fact, we have something crazy in mind for getting you and yours truly involved in dessert. We will also have a Blues Dance Lesson and some dancing in the upper studio. Sophie will be encouraging everyone to Hot Tub, massage and body paint.

Then, around midnight, the cast from the Red Show will be coming over to party after their show. It will definitely be a wet and wild night.

Cost: $50 per person

Note: To reserve tickets you must call the office at 206-328-4758.

Back from the holidays!

So much has been happening here at the spa. Here is a quick synopsis.

~We had another round of renovations, which induced a bit of rearranging and reorganization. Soon, the piano will be moved out of the spa and our changing area will be more like a changing room!

~The Open Spa Nights were canceled, but new ideas are forming for a another event. One of the dancers at Little Red Studio has the idea of having a blues dance lesson for couples during a spa night. She and I are still working out the details. Keep tuned to our newsletter, hopefully we'll be ready to host this evening around Valentine's Day.

~The spa products that were for sale at the Little Red Studio's Holiday Bazaar are going to become a regular offering at the Spa and the Studio. You will be able buy salt scrub, bath salts, massage oil, among other things, at both locations. Thank you to everyone who encouraged me and supported me in developing these products. Your feedback and noses were very valuable!

~The Little Red Day Spa is going to have a presence at the Little Red Studio shows! If you went to the Saffron Show, you experienced the Touch tent where people delighted your skin with feathers, faux furs, honey dust and massage. It was so well received and so much fun for us, that it will soon become a staple of the Gold and other Coloured show. I am looking for more tactile activities, so, if you have a suggestion, please feel free to offer it up the next time you see me or via email.

The New Year's Eve Party will have a "Touch Tent" with all of the above and I have just been contacted by our resident Yogini, Mishabae, offering to teach people yoga postures for couples and some of her yummy "Thai Yogassage" tricks!

Couples' Night is now an Open Spa Night for all!

Due to suggestion, feedback and an edict from on high, I am changing the Couple's Spa Nights to just Spa Night. Nothing is changing about the evening other than if your sweetie can't come with you the 2nd or 4th Sunday of the month, you don't have to deny yourself a trip to the Little Red Day Spa! Reservations are encouraged, but not required.

Spa Night at the Little Red Day Spa
2nd and 4th Sundays
Drop in 7-10 pm • Cost: $20/person

This is a catered evening for couples and singles of all genders to pamper themselves or just lounge in the Little Red Studio’s spa. Short massages or watsu will be available for an additional fee. Clothing optional.

Odd combination?

Last night I got to sit in on the LRS Erotic Haunted House: The Dreaming dress rehearsal. Even though there was the occasional "oops" it was so much fun! Not too scary, but definitely very creepy and weird. The sound guy was still fine tuning the music and sound effects so I am excited to see what changes end up being made.

I liked how much like a dream the whole show was. Somehow, even when it was unsettling, the surreal nature kept me grounded. I know that must sound strange, but trust me, when you see it, I bet you will understand what I mean.

As a fun addition, if you come to this Sunday's Couples' Night or Monday's Ladies' Night, you will get $5 off your Erotic Haunted House ticket when you pay for both events. There is a 9:30pm during the run, so it's perfect timing to come to the spa and soak and relax and then take the 5 minute drive over to 750 Harrison St. to see the show. I won't be able to leave on Sunday night, but on Monday I'll be leading anyone who wants to follow me over to the show.

It's going to be so much fun!

Busy! Busy! Busy!

Unfortunately, not with all fun stuff. Web site revisions, car prowls and dentists! Oh my! Though, I would gladly recommend using hypnosis when you have to undergo a dental procedure. Last week I finished the second of 3 appointments to deal with a difficult root canal and was quite relaxed throughout the whole procedure. It was strange to feel every sensation and not have it register as pain. The best part, for me, was not having a fear reaction to the drill, either. That is very cool stuff.

Changes are coming up soon on the web site. I have been tweaking and fine tuning. Christina, a troupe member with a creative photographic eye, came into the spa and took some lovely photographs of the space. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the space through new eyes. Here is the one that captured the serenity I feel in the spa.
(Be sure to click on the photo for a larger version.)

There are two price changes coming up for our drop in nights. Both the Ladies' and Men's Spa Nights entry fee will increase to $15 per person and Couple's Spa Nights will increase to $40 per couple. These increases are effective starting the next scheduled dates. This means that Couple's Spa Night this coming Sunday, September 28th, will be the first event with the new price. All other little extra services and their fees are subject to availability and practitioner discretion.

Courtnee is away for the weekend, so I will be hosting this Sunday's Couple's Night. We have a wonderful dessert to share with you that Kim made special for a private dinner on Friday. It was so incredible that he offered to make it for me to offer at Couple's Night. It is a caramel and nut tulle filled with chocolate mousse and on a bed of naked truffle sauce.

LRS on the radio!

KUOW did an interview with Jeff Hengst about Little Red Studio and the Little Red Day Spa and it's going to air today at 2:50pm! KUOW is 94.9 on the fm dial. Tune in to your radio and hear the latest about the Studio, or Go to their website and click on "Listen Live to KUOW (MP3)"

Tonight's Gold Show at LRS is looking amazing. We have a new couple joining us who sing 18th century bawdy songs in full period undergarments, a storyteller with an erotic tale to entice you, a summertime dessert, poetry, Bellydancing, body painting, and I am doing a new aerials act! Whew, that's a lot and I didn't even list the whole program. As always, there will be dancing and a non-alcoholic drinks and dessert bar during the show, as well as after the final act. I am very excited about this new act. I don't want to give away too much, but it is going to ahve an element of puppetry to the aerials which has been really tricky to work out, but has turned out great. I hope to see you there!

Also, this Sunday evening is Couple's Night at the Spa. It's from 7pm until 10pm, $25 per couple and we are asking for reservations. Courtnee will be holding court in the spa, facilitating your use of the equipment. For a nominal gratuity, she will help you to pamper your sweetie with the mud or a salt scrub. Please call me at 206-963-0772 or email Sophia at HengstStudio.com to get your space saved.

Whew! I made it!

This weekend was Erotic Shorts, Little Red Studio's quarterly theatrical offering. I was asked to audition for a part and even though I had never acted before or spoken someone else's words on stage, I tried out and landed the part of The Aerialist in "Double Decker Bus." This was the first screenplay Clayton, the LRS stage manager, has written and I was excited to be a part of it.

My first play went smashingly well. There were a few ups and downs in the whole process, but I think it is safe to say that all three performances were a success. Each night had it's challenges. By the time of the dress rehearsal, I felt flush with how each run through built on the next. I felt ready. But the difference in how it feels on the stage when only a handful of chairs were filled and when the show is sold out is more dramatic than I could have ever guessed! By Sunday night, the building energy came to a head and the emotions spilled forth. I was surprised at the intensity I felt around the character and story. Clayton wrote about this at length in his blog. In many ways, my experiences mirrored his, so I will let his eloquence speak for me, as well.

I am very grateful to Courtnee for running last night's Couple's Spa Night so that I could commit to performing in erotic Shorts. It was such a wonderful and enriching experience. She had such a good time that she and I have discussed her taking over as the regular host for the evening. I have to admit, I am excited about the prospect of attending a Spa Night as a guest, too!

I look for patterns.

One of the things I like to do most in life is to analyze people, their behaviours and social events. I look for patterns, not only so I can make predictions about future happenings, but also so that I can recognize something different.

We had our third Couple's Spa Night yesterday. It was quite a nice affair with a good mix of people. The pattern emerging is for everyone to be social in the hot tub, much like during Ladies' Night, at the start of the evening. Slowly, pairs drifted out of the water. Even though I had lowered the tub temperature down to 98F, no one was interested in staying in for Watsu. Not surprising after a hot day.

Couple's took turns using the 3 massage tables to trade massage. Most everyone indulged in the coolness of the clay that was scented with peppermint and lavender essential oils. Being scrubbed head to foot with the Pineapple Salt Scrub got rave reviews from the gentleman, some of whom had never had the pleasure.

There were many correlations to how the Ladies' Night evenings shape up. Some of the women who attended with their partners have been to Ladies' Night, so that may have had a lot to do with it. But I can't help but be curious if human behaviour in groups is not that variable.

Small reminder: Ladies' Night tonight!
