Tonight is our very first Moonlight Drop-In spa night! From 9:30pm - 12:30 am, Punzel will be on staff to welcome you and get you settled into relaxing your day's stresses away. This is an event specifically timed for anyone in the service industry or on a swing or graveyard shift who can't make the Tuesday afternoon drop-ins.
This is just like all our other drop-in session in that no appointment is necessary and the entry fee is $15. Same easy-going social atmosphere that still allows for quiet relaxation.
There is limited parking in the lot, please leave those spaces open for our guests with mobility difficulties.

Change in Payment Policy
The Little Red Day Spa is reverting to a "cash only" payment system for an indeterminate period of time. If you have already paid a deposit on a spa session via credit card, don't worry, that is still valid. The balance of your payment should be in cash at the time of your appointment.
There are a lot of accounting reasons why we are doing this, some of which are confidential, some of which are too boring to mention.
Thank you for your cooperation with this new policy. Or if you have been coming to the spa for a while, going back to our old policy.

Changes are afoot!
I am no longer the Director of the Little Red Day Spa. My official title is Spa Manager and Cheri, whom many of you have worked with as a spa practitioner, is now the Director and will be shepherding the Spa form this date forward. It is a very interesting dynamic. Cheri is my superior and will be making decisions regarding the larger picture decisions, marketing and organizational systems while looking to me to implement these new systems. However, I will manage her as one of the practitioners in the day to day operations of the Spa.
I am very pleased with this development. We have gotten so busy that I have been doing little more than keeping everything going. I was feeling guilty that I had fallen behind in the marketing development I had been charged with by Jeff. I also find that I was not exceptionally suited to that type of work, either. Cheri, on the other hand, is. Go, Cheri!
A big change is the contact email for the Spa has changed to Relax@LittleRedDaySpa.com. My email at HengstStudio.com still works, and I will endeavor to affect a gentle switch over. Unfortunately, the company that hosts our website is updating their servers, so the site will not reflect this new email address until the 11th or 12th. overall, I am pleased about this because now I can take time off and not worry about whether emails will get answered in case I forgot to give my password to someone else or not.
Other changes to come include create your own private "Spa Night" event during the day or evening and new spa sessions.

Web changes coming.
Over the next month or so, I will be working on updating the spa web site. Enough little changes have come and spawned other little changes that it can no longer be put off. This is also the perfect time to codify new and refined policies. And how about a Frequently Asked Questions page? After 3 and a half years, we definitely have questions that get asked over and over. Admittedly, those questions are what made me realize that we needed a web update.
The testimonial page needs some new blood, too. If you have a story about your visit to the Little Red Day Spa that you would like to share with the world, please email Sophia@HengstStudio.com and I will add it to the web page.

Know a good cleaning service?
I joke that Spa Director translates as hot tub repair technician, but the truth is that the title has a lot of different hats that accompany the glory or directing and stewarding the spa.
I am ready to give up one of the hats, and that is of cleaning person. I am now looking for either a service or an individual that cleans homes and offices as their vocation. this is not a position that I am looking to hire someone for, rather I want a contractor with whom to engage their services. Stitches update.
My hand is doing great. I already have full use of my thumb and the only movement that hurts is the one where I smack the back of my hand on something hard. I have declared myself back in action. Officially, I still have to keep my hand out of the tub so if I am wearing glove when you come in for a session, that's why. A nitrile examination glove with athletic tape around the wrist is water tight for 15-20 minutes.
I have scheduled my fist massage since my little accident for tomorrow. Even though it is less than a week, I am confident that I will be able to work. I have been healing so fast, at the very least I will be able to use my forearm on the left side, even if I can't use the hand. I actually did one handed massage for 8 months after a severe car accident in 1999 left me with sprained sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular ligaments. Luckily, skin takes much less time than ligament to heal due to the increased blood supply.

At least I will have a great story to go with the scar.
Yesterday, Jeff had a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the troupe to commemorate the opening of the Bistro. The grand Opening isn't until next week, when we have our Summer Bash on the 25th. Jeff wanted a little ritual to honour all the hard work that has gone into building and preparing the Bistro to open and also to hand over the reigns of operation to the new manager, Jim.
I was incredibly touched when Jeff asked me to coordinate with Cheri on a little ceremony, giving us the directive that he trusted whatever we came up with as long as he was the one who got to cut the ribbon. He also asked me if I would christen the Bistro by smashing a bottle of champagne on the corner of the building. See where this is going?
During the planning, Jim was sharing horror stories with Jeff of ship christenings where the bottle had to be swung numerous times to get it to break on the prow of the ship. As a result, Jeff emphatically directed me to use all my strength. Everyone gave a small count down and I swung, getting my torso behind my swing, and the bottle smashed spectacularly with a satisfying pop and spray of bubbles! Unfortunately, one of the pieces somehow bounced back and cut my left hand bad enough to need two stitches. At the time, we washed it out and I applied pressure and decided it was safe to finish out the ceremony. Next, a quick trip to the walk-in clinic where I was in and out in 30 minutes. Then back for a panini dinner at the Bistro. James, the Chef, thanked me for being the first one to get cut at the Bistro.
As a result, I will be unable to perform massage for at least a week. This is a fabulous time to take the opportunity to work with one of my other incredible practitioners. They have all graciously stepped up to cover my shifts at the spa until I get the go-ahead from the doctor to resume my full work. While you may be saying, "but, you are right handed, how come you can't massage." Actually, I am left
hand dominant during massage and the cut is on the back of my hand, close to the thumb knuckle. Using my thumb painfully stretches the skin, pulling at the stitches. I also can't get my hand wet for at least three days and I can't get into the hot tub with an open wound. So I am unsure of when I will be able to do a watsu session.
The upside is that I will be easier to get a hold of by phone since I won't be in session! Feel free to give me a call at (206) 963-0772 or email Sophia@ HengstStudio.com to schedule a spa session or massage with Cheri, Courtnee, Dion, Zan or Cody.

Werid web site stuff.
Periodically, I get a phone call from someone wanting to RSVP for the now defunct Couple's Spa Night. Each time, they give the the same answer to my query of how they found out about an event that we haven't had on the calendar for about four months: "I did an internet search and I am looking at the page right now." And then a discussion about new web pages and refreshing and updated pages takes place. It is usually very frustrating because each of us are claiming to be looking at the page and yet we aren't seeing the same information.
I finally remembered to do my own search for a couple's spa in Seattle and found the page people have been telling me about. And there it is, the old web pages from last summer, before we did the big overhaul on the Little Red Day Spa site. For some reason, those old pages are still stored on the server that hosts our web sites. Talk about embarrassing.
Refreshing doesn't get you to the new Spa pages, you have to type in www.LittleRedDaySpa.com into the address bar to get to the current pages. I have a message in to the person who updates the web site for LRS and the Day Spa and hopefully that confusion will be resolved.
As for the question of the return of Couple's Spa Night, it looks like it's not to be. It was a very difficult evening for us, as staff, to run efficiently and with clarity of vision. My current proposal on the table is to turn the SpeakEasy party/performance nights into a partial spa night. If you were at the last SpeakEasy, then you may have been a part of the body mud extravaganza that took place after the final act. It turned out exactly how I wished the Couple's Spa Nights would have turn into. We'll see. It's still another 2-3 months before the next SpeakEasy, plenty of time to scheme and gather feedback.

Dream Work Class by LRS member
At the last Gold Show, Kirsten headed up a project entitled "Lightening Dreamwork" which was a 3 part interactive performance piece. The first part invited guests to share a dream, either recent, old, a daydream, and go through a 5 minute long process of delving into it's meaning. The second part pooled everyone's dream imagery together and crafted it into a "collective dream". The third part was the enactment, or Dream Theater.
I was involved on all three levels and had an amazing experience. What was just as interesting to me as gaining insight about my own dream, was watching other people recognize their dream imagery in the performance piece. One person, who relayed a recurring nightmare, excitedly said "You changed the dream! You gave it a new ending!"
What I like most about this system of dream interpretation is that it relies on you finding the kernels of meaning in your dreams, not someone else telling you what they mean. Every time Kirsten has taken me through the process, I get some valuable insight into myself. I highly endorse her workshops.

There is a Town Hall meeting scheduled for this Sunday morning at 11 AM in our South Lake Union facility.(On the corner of Dexter Ave. N. and Harrision St.) I have invited the Troupe and all our Guests. We will talk about the plans for the new Bistro, what it will look and feel like, discuss our "opening", talk about project target dates and more.
This gathering will also serve as an opportunity to formally welcome aboard all the new members of the Troupe since our last big gathering at our Fall Retreat in September. We will take some time to go over the principles and vision of Little Red Studio and talk about the up-coming shows, plans for the Spring and Summer Schedule and some other fun ideas that have been simmering.
This meeting will end at 1PM. I will be available in the Bistro space all afternoon to answer individual questions and discuss things in more detail for those that are interested.
I will be in attendance to talk about the Little Red Day Spa and our involvement in the Little Red Studio family of events. More changes!
The Little Red Studio office is invading!
Next Tuesday, we will be moving Kerry, the office manager for Hengst Studio and Little Red Studio into the front waiting room of the Spa. This won't impact the Spa other than to make our waiting room a bit more crowded. Jeff has promised to do a little bit so extra soundproofing so that the LRS phones and daily business won't intrude into the inner sanctum where people are relaxing. I am very excited to have Kerry around. Not only is she wonderful company, for me as well as everyone waiting for the start of their spa session, but she is quite organized and I plan to pick her brain.
Over on Dexter and Harrison, construction will begin in the corner space that has been the main office and lobby for Little Red Studio. This is phase one of the build out for the Little Red Bistro, our coffee/dessert/wine cafe. It is Jeff's hope that the Bistro "will not only be a jewel in the South Lake Union neighborhood, but another place for us to express our J'oie de Vivre, our liberating libertine sensibilities and our love of great food and wine." Keep an eye on the website as it is updated with more information. It's a very exciting time, indeed!

Ahead of the game.
Today has been full of accomplishments. I feel like I could be done and still satisfied with the day. I still have the floors to mop and the hot tub to clean, so I still get to revel in being productive.
We shut down the spa today for routine tub maintenance and had the Spa Doctor people come in and give us a tune up and check out a weird noise. Turns out it was as simple as having a small plastic wheel looking thing stuck inside the pump. How it got there, I have no idea, as it had to go through the filter to get there! In response to the found object, we have a new policy of nothing smaller than a fist in/at the hot tub. Sorry, ladies, no more treats other than tea and water in the tub while soaking during Ladies' Spa Night.
I got to look over some paperwork that our CFO, Roland, is working on that details the improvements and future plans for the spa. With all the talk of investors, I am seeing some great things that could happen to the spa. Not the least of which is a larger tub. This means that I could have two people receiving watsu simultaneously. For those of you who enjoy the Couple's Massage sessions, you would be able to have the Watsu equivalent when we get this new tub.
There is no set date on when any of this will happen. It could be next month or next year. There is no knowing how long the process will take. But reading the paperwork and making my notes on it for the next revision made it real for me as a possibility. Getting to put in my two cents was an incredible honor. This is Jeff's business, but it's been my baby for over 3 years now. Jeff giving me room to direct and steer the spa is why I feel such a profound sense of ownership. I am fortunate to have such a job.
I am heading back to my grind, with these happy thoughts of new buildings, huge watsu pools and a waterfall for a cold plunge filling my imagination.

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a safe and fun new year celebration.
I have been having fun reorganizing the spa with this last round of renovations and yearly repairs. Be sure to take a peek at the changes next time you visit the spa. One of the changes I am excited about is the area that will be devoted to displaying spa products that will be for sale. My labels finally arrived and they look quite snazzy on the bottles.
The spa has been quite busy with sessions, too, so please be understanding if we are booked if you call for a same or next day appointment.

Back from the holidays!
So much has been happening here at the spa. Here is a quick synopsis.
~We had another round of renovations, which induced a bit of rearranging and reorganization. Soon, the piano will be moved out of the spa and our changing area will be more like a changing room!
~The Open Spa Nights were canceled, but new ideas are forming for a another event. One of the dancers at Little Red Studio has the idea of having a blues dance lesson for couples during a spa night. She and I are still working out the details. Keep tuned to our newsletter, hopefully we'll be ready to host this evening around Valentine's Day.
~The spa products that were for sale at the Little Red Studio's Holiday Bazaar are going to become a regular offering at the Spa and the Studio. You will be able buy salt scrub, bath salts, massage oil, among other things, at both locations. Thank you to everyone who encouraged me and supported me in developing these products. Your feedback and noses were very valuable!
~The Little Red Day Spa is going to have a presence at the Little Red Studio shows! If you went to the Saffron Show, you experienced the Touch tent where people delighted your skin with feathers, faux furs, honey dust and massage. It was so well received and so much fun for us, that it will soon become a staple of the Gold and other Coloured show. I am looking for more tactile activities, so, if you have a suggestion, please feel free to offer it up the next time you see me or via email.
The New Year's Eve Party will have a "Touch Tent" with all of the above and I have just been contacted by our resident Yogini, Mishabae, offering to teach people yoga postures for couples and some of her yummy "Thai Yogassage" tricks!

News about Open Spa Nights.
The Little Red Day Spa's Open Spa Nights are canceled until further notice. As much as these evenings were loved, they were not providing enough return on the investment of time and energy. We have decided to focus the spa's resources in other directions, namely further developing our spa products into an actual product line.
If you enjoyed the Open Spa Night, please consider joining Richard for Men's Spa Night, every 1st and 3rd Sunday, and Sophia for Ladies' Spa Night, every 1st Monday. Or, rent the spa with a few friends for $75 the first hour, and $50 each additional hour. either option will entitle you to full use of the spa and it's amenities.

Spa product announcement!
So, this is a recall, of sorts.
One of the batches of Strawberry Salt Scrub I made to sell at the Little Red Studio Bazaar was made with a different salt than I normally use. Upon being exposed to air, this batch turns darker in color, a brownish purple. It's not going rancid, just changing color.
I have been using it in the spa and watching it over the last week. The smell and consistency have remained pleasant. It's just not pretty and that is unacceptable to me. If you bought the Strawberry Salt scrub in the small jars, please contact me at (206) 963-0772 or email Sophia@hengstStudio.com and I will make arrangements with you to replace the scrub. (Make sure to keep the jar so I can refill it for you.)
*Reminder: The salt scrub product does separate.It is normal for liquid to pool at the top. Mix thoroughly before each use.

Go vote!
I know everyone is talking about it, but this is important. It doesn't matter who you vote for, as long as you think about it and vote your conscience.
Jeff has a policy that politics don't enter into the Little Red Studio and that's a good policy. The only caveat I would add is that it is good to acknowledge that everyone has politics that, like ethics, shape their lives and views of the world. You can't completely escape it, but last night, during Ladies' Spa Night, it was sure nice to have an oasis to relax in, away from all the political talk.
Now please pardon me, I have to get back to reading my voter pamphlet so I can finish voting. KEXP, a local Seattle public radio station, has been playing some very fun music for voting. I'll be taking advantage of the ballot drop boxes as a way to transition myself to the mail in voting. I'm already missing going to the polling place.

Busy! Busy! Busy!
Unfortunately, not with all fun stuff. Web site revisions, car prowls and dentists! Oh my! Though, I would gladly recommend using hypnosis when you have to undergo a dental procedure. Last week I finished the second of 3 appointments to deal with a difficult root canal and was quite relaxed throughout the whole procedure. It was strange to feel every sensation and not have it register as pain. The best part, for me, was not having a fear reaction to the drill, either. That is very cool stuff.
Changes are coming up soon on the web site. I have been tweaking and fine tuning. Christina, a troupe member with a creative photographic eye, came into the spa and took some lovely photographs of the space. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the space through new eyes. Here is the one that captured the serenity I feel in the spa.

There are two price changes coming up for our drop in nights. Both the Ladies' and Men's Spa Nights entry fee will increase to $15 per person and Couple's Spa Nights will increase to $40 per couple. These increases are effective starting the next scheduled dates. This means that Couple's Spa Night this coming Sunday, September 28th, will be the first event with the new price. All other little extra services and their fees are subject to availability and practitioner discretion.

KUOW did an interview with Jeff Hengst about Little Red Studio and the Little Red Day Spa and it's going to air today at 2:50pm! KUOW is 94.9 on the fm dial. Tune in to your radio and hear the latest about the Studio, or Go to their website and click on "Listen Live to KUOW (MP3)"
Tonight's Gold Show at LRS is looking amazing. We have a new couple joining us who sing 18th century bawdy songs in full period undergarments, a storyteller with an erotic tale to entice you, a summertime dessert, poetry, Bellydancing, body painting, and I am doing a new aerials act! Whew, that's a lot and I didn't even list the whole program. As always, there will be dancing and a non-alcoholic drinks and dessert bar during the show, as well as after the final act. I am very excited about this new act. I don't want to give away too much, but it is going to ahve an element of puppetry to the aerials which has been really tricky to work out, but has turned out great. I hope to see you there!
Also, this Sunday evening is Couple's Night at the Spa. It's from 7pm until 10pm, $25 per couple and we are asking for reservations. Courtnee will be holding court in the spa, facilitating your use of the equipment. For a nominal gratuity, she will help you to pamper your sweetie with the mud or a salt scrub. Please call me at 206-963-0772 or email Sophia at HengstStudio.com to get your space saved.
